When I told people that I was writing an article more than one seasoned sailor told me that playing Harpoon was what got them into the Navy. Harpoon was a classic computer game of the 1990s. Harpoon V (right) Larry Bond Why Navies Use Harpoon The Computer game (center) was released in 1989. Consequently accuracy was, to the extent possible, maintained.Ĭovers of Harpoon series games. Smoke and mirrors could be used to simplify the mechanics, but each missile needed to be modeled separately to meet the Harpoon standards of realism. A regiment of Backfires all launching their missiles was still enough to strain the 1990s computer hardware though. This was at a time when even the latest home computers, 286s, were struggling to run the complex models involved in a simulation like Harpoon. Bond was already working on a more complete version however, which was released the next year simply as Harpoon. It was a great game, but computer hardware of the time meant that it had to be limited to submarine warfare. It was released on the Commodore 64 in 1988. In the end Sid Meier, the creator of Civilization, made the first Harpoon-based computer game. With the success of Red Storm Rising, computer game companies queued up to create a digital version. To start with, the Soviets had to be winning in the first part of the book, so Clancy had to draw on his strategic genius to think up plot twists to keep the story on track. Speargun: Makes more noise (can mask shark movements) reasonable damage for an early on weapon, usually buyable when the sharks still haven't evolved much so you can make use of modifyers with it to mess with the sharks. But Red Storm Rising could not be a literal narration of the wargames. Harpoon is best, most dmg, quietest firing. the drag rounds would do you well, killing one shark in one hit, and slowing the HH down for your team mates. It does work well against some large sharks - not two tank sharks, but if you have a mix of a tiger and HH say. ** if the mako went for ignore pain - you might not kill it - but by then you probably have money to buy an ads / aps (better for mako) *If you add toxic rounds the tiger is definatley dead. Speargun will 1 hit kill a thresher, tiger * and mako** Harpoon is overkill for a speed shark - it just kills them straight up. It has good upgrades early on, harpoon has better ones later on to deal with tank sharks. On this point even sonar bouys can be a nuissance. creates that 'Bonnng' sound which is loud and lasts a while - once again rendering you and your team mates unable to properly hear sharks. I see the speargun as fairly balanced as it's a powerful early weapon but has the above disadvantage, in the same way using the sonar gun used as a sonar/wall hax. How long you can't rely on your hearing for sounds of sharks swimming nearby.Įvery speargun shot makes a noise for most of a second that can mask a nearby shark. So the two main considerations for me are: However it makes a 'whoosh' kind of a sound when fired (to me anyhow)Īnd it's quite a lengthly sound compared to the quick firing sound the harpoon makes. I love the speargun - i think it's what i use most of the time. Main thing i'd bear in mind: noise they make.
